As many are aware I have been to Cambodia a couple of times to assist charities in the area. On my first trip, I rode a push bike through the country to raise money for needy children on behalf of the Oxfam Charity Organisation. I visited many orphanages and met many people along the way who inspired me, including Anna Dahlberg , working as a nurse in an Aids hospital in Phnom Penh. After I got home we emailed to keep in touch and realized that record keeping in the isolated area was far from satisfactory and there was a need for a computer database solution. This would allow staff within the organisations to easily keep track of the children’s details; family history; medical records and maintain their accuracy. Just so happens that my self taught computer database skills obtained from 23 years in running the Professionals at Wamberal was in fact in demand. So I went back to Cambodia and my niece Vanessa joined me when I have had little contact with over the years due to our distance from each other. Turns out her profession is database construction for major companies such as Suncorp etc (did not realize this until we met in Cambodia). Using my preferred program Filemaker Pro and networking knowledge, we setup a network, installed the internet, created a streamlined database and revamped the computer system. The end result was a database for disenfranchised children that categorized medicines, illnesses, personal details addresses and family information. Pleased with our efforts we had a few days off visited some fabulous landmarks in the country then returned home. Back to reality, homework and a standard of living unheard of back in Cambodia. Then one day an email arrived from M’lop Tapang. Word had got around throughout the NGO’s (non government organizations) around Cambodia that a volunteer Uncle and Niece team had a system at no cost to them. We agreed to help. The database has been completely re written, now professional quality and we were off to Sihanoukville Cambodia on the 1st November 2008, to present our database and give tutorials to the staff for implementation of the system.
Sihanoukville is an extremely poor area and has a large population of families who live at the local garbage tip to scavenge for food just to exist. M’lop Tapang is a centre for street kids and school for the poorest kids in the area. At M’lop Tapang they try to help the kids with food and educate them. There are around 1100 kids they help. It’s our mission to create a networked computer system with a database server connected to the internet. The database will list details of all kids, personal information, medical info, drugs supplied and history. We have designed it to be easy to use, easy to train new staff and easily modifiable when the need arises. The code is not protected and is freely available.
With the hundreds of charity organizations throughout Asia we sincerely hope that our system can be used to assist disenfranchised children, and hope that it will help these good Samaritans help the needy.
We do this because we can! Vanessa and I receive no payment and pay our travel and accommodation. Our reward is the smiles on the kid’s faces J
